High blood pressure, also known as hypertension, is famously branded the “silent killer” because it is usually symptomless. Making a few small changes to your lifestyle will help to ensure better management of the condition and a reduction of serious health risks. Experts advise cutting down on the amount of salt consumed and adding in more aerobic exercising.
Aerobic exercise is extremely effective in helping to control high blood pressure.
A person doesn’t need to spend hours in the gym every day to benefit from aerobic activity.
Simply adding moderate physical activities to your daily routine will help.
Any physical activity which increases the heart and breathing rates is considered aerobic activity.

Exercises to do at home which could be considered aerobic exercises include:
Household chores, such as mowing the lawn, raking leaves, gardening or scrubbing the floor
Active sports, such as basketball or tennis

“Different kinds of exercise and activity have different effects on your body,” said Blood Pressure UK.
The health charity added: “If you have high blood pressure, you should try to focus on activities that will help your heart and blood vessels. Aerobic activity is the type that helps your heart the most.
“Aerobic activities are repetitive and rhythmic movements [exercises], and they use the large muscle groups of your body, such as those in your legs, shoulders and arms.
“Walking, jogging, swimming, dancing and digging are all aerobic activities.”
To reduce the risk of injury while exercising, start slowly.
Remember to warm up before you exercise and cool down afterward. Build up the intensity of your workouts gradually.
Stop exercising and seek immediate medical care if you experience any warning signs during exercise, including:
- Chest, neck, jaw or arm pain or tightness
- Dizziness or faintness
- Severe shortness of breath
- An irregular heartbeat
High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, because symptoms only tend to reveal themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.
The most common high blood pressure symptoms include a pounding in your chest, finding blood in your urine, and severe headaches.
It’s crucial that all adults over the age of 40 check their blood pressure at least once every five years.
