To say 2018 has been a tumultuous year for Khloe Kardashian would be a huge understatement. For the ill-informed among us, clips of Tristan Thompson allegedly making out with another woman emerged just two days before the reality star gave birth to their first child.
And over the weekend, she opened up about how the whole situation took a toll on her body – including her ability to nurse her daughter, True.
On Twitter, when a fan asked Khloe if she had any tips for breastfeeding, she responded: “I tried breastfeeding for weeks and weeks! For me it was so painful but I also was not producing a lot of milk. So I had to pump every time she was napping.”
The 34-year-old said she reckons her milk didn’t come in “due to stress.” But it wasn’t until the baby started losing weight that she decided to switch to formula.
“I tried literally EVERYTHING!!” she added. “Doctors came to check, I met with the lactation specialist, I did power pumping, I drink the tea, ate the cookies, did special massages etc. It just wasn’t working for me.”
As it turns out, Khloe’s totally right: stress can slow the flow. In fact, Dr Shivani Patel, author of Your Pregnancy Matters explains it’s the “no. 1 killer of breastmilk supply, especially in the first few weeks after delivery.”
So what can be done? Dr Patel advises mothers who are having trouble lactating to “seek and accept help from your partner, family members and friends so you can rest, recover and maintain an adequate milk supply.”
And above all, know you’re not alone. As Khloe’s tweet proves, there are plenty of women out there who share her struggle.
“I too wasn’t producing enough milk and had to supplement formula the 1st week since my babes lost too much weight,” one commented. “It broke my heart but we do what we have to for our babies.”
