Olivia Newton-John reveals breast cancer return – how is the disease treated?

Breast cancer is more common in woman aged 50 and over and the exact cause for the disease is still not fully understood. If breast cancer is detected early, it can be treated before it spreads to nearby parts of the body. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recently announced it’s decision to provisionally approve a new drug for breast cancer called neratinib. The drug has been recommended for use as an additional treatment option for patients with breast cancer after surgery.

The drug is believed to help stop cancer cells growing and prevent it from returning.

Baroness Delyth Morgan, chief executive at Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now said: “The fear of breast cancer returning or spreading to other parts of the body can cause women considerable anxiety.

“This new drug has been one of the greatest advances in treating breast cancer in recent decades and could reduce the chances of the disease coming back.”

Grease star Olivia Newton-John, 70, recently revealed her breast cancer has returned.

The singer and actress discussed her recent diagnosis with 60 Minutes Australia and said: “When you’re given a cancer diagnosis or a scary honest diagnosis, you’re suddenly given a possibility of time.

“If somebody tells you, you have six months to live, very possibly you will because you believe that.

“So for me, psychologically, it’s better not to have any idea of what they expect or what the last person that has what you have lived, so I don’t, I don’t tune in.”

The Australian star was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and again in 2013, but chose to keep her battle private.

Now that the cancer has returned, Newton-John said she’s been using cannabis oil to help manage her pain.

Newton-John expressed gratitude and positivity despite the crippling prognosis. “I’m so lucky that I’ve been through this three times and I’m still here.

“I’m living with it. Every day is a gift now, particularly now.”

Typically, the breast cancer forms in either the lobules or the ducts of the breast.

Lobules are the glands that produce milk, and ducts are the pathways that bring the milk from the glands to the nipple.

Cancer can also occur in the fatty tissue of the fibrous connective tissue within the breast.

Some signs of the disease include a lump in the breast, a change in the size or shape of the breast, dimpling skin or thickening in the breast tissue, a nipple that’s turned in, a rash on the nipple, discharge from the nipple or a swelling in the armpit.

It’s strongly advised to speak with your GP if you notice any of these symptoms.

Newton-John revealed that she will be auctioning some of her memorabilia, including the famous leather outfit she wore in the iconic Grease film which co-starred John Travolta.

The proceeds will go towards the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre.
