Doses for two years of the carbohydrate, also known as fermentable fibre, did not affect such diseases in the bowel but cut them by “over 60 percent” in other areas.

The remarkable effect lasted for 10 years.

Professor John Mathers, who co-led the trials by Newcastle and Leeds universities, said resistant starch may cut “cancer development by changing bile acids that can damage DNA and cause cancer”.
