Social jetlag triggers obesity and heart disease

In the First MSMU n. a. I. M. Sechenov took place the conference “Actual problems of somnology”, during which the experts touched upon the issue of social jetlag. This concept implies the well – known phenomenon- the difference in time of sleep and waking in weekdays and weekends.

The term “social jetlag” introduced in 2006, scientist of the University of Munich (Germany) mark Wittmann, said. He introduced this concept to refer to the habits of working people to limit your sleep during the week and longer sleep at the weekend. Like jet lag, according to the scientist, is very harmful to health, causing various diseases. Since then I accumulated several hundred of scientific publications proving the deceit and danger of social jetlag.

Usually about jetlag say when people change time zones its existence. Scientists say: you don’t have to travel far to experience jet lag. On Friday and Saturday people usually Wake up and go later than on weekdays. According to experts, for the body is the same as a flight to another time zone, is a serious stress.

“Social jetlag correlates with insulin resistance, low “good” cholesterol and excess weight,” say the researchers.
Several scientific studies show that constant social jet lag provokes a number of diseases such as obesity, headaches and chronic fatigue and heart disease.

Russian scientists also take seriously the problem of social jetlag. According to researcher Alexandra Beam from the Institute of higher nervous activity and neurophysiology of RAS, on the background of bad or short sleep physicians do observe the development of insulin resistance, because for proper metabolic processes of the body requires normal sleep. Moreover, sleep disorders lead to an increase in the body levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin and lower levels are responsible for the energy of the hormone leptin – the result is that the person unconsciously increases the appetite, is formed by overeating, increases the risk of obesity.

In turn, scientists from the University of Arizona (USA) established that each hour of difference in waking up on weekends and in the middle of the working week provokes deterioration in the heart, increasing the risk of strokes and heart attacks by 11%.
