Usually by this time of year, summer body mania is in full swing. But 2020 has hit differently.
Celebrity trainer Ben Bruno knows that this year, you might not have as many chances to show off your hard-earned muscles. Instead, you’ll want to accentuate all of the key features that pop most when you sit in front of a webcam on Zoom (or Skype, if you’re stuck in 2012) to see your co-workers, friends, and family. And then your friends again, and then your now digital training session, then trivia night—until you realize the only moments of the day you weren’t on a webcam were when you ate, slept, and went to the bathroom.
“Beach bodies are a thing of the past; 2020 is the year of the ‘Zoom Body’ since that’s the only way we see people nowadays,” he captioned his post.
If that’s the case, you’ll want to focus on your most important assets. What body part is king when it comes to looking fit on your virtual calls? Traps. Instead of putting in the work on beach body staples like abs, go for the traps. Arms? Nah man, TRAPS. Bruno has the perfect plan to get you right for this brave new world.
In the video, Bruno’s repping through shrugs. When asked why he’s doing them, he responds, “I gave up working on my beach body… I’m working on my Zoom body,” he says.
The full Zoom Body workout? Shrugs. Just… shrugs.
Ben Bruno’s Zoom Body Workout Plan
A1: Shrugs, 4 sets of 10
B1: Shrugs, 4 sets of 10
C1: Shrugs, 4 sets of 10
Turns out, committing to the Zoom Body lifestyle isn’t that complicated. Let’s dive into the shrug with Men’s Health fitness director Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S., so can really nail the exercise.
“The key to the shrug is making sure you move only up-and-down in the frontal plane. Don’t roll your shoulders forward and backward. Keep your shoulder blades tight when you’re shrugging too,” says Samuel. “Additionally, don’t rock. Keep your core tight and shoulder blades squeezed. Pause for a moment at the top of every rep as well, really focusing in on your traps.”
But there is one common pitfall that could ruin your whole Zoom look: excessive elbow movement. “A lot of people let their elbows bend and try to create upward momentum at the hips,” says Samuel. “Avoid these. You’re focusing solely on your traps here, so you can grow them into visual powerhouses for Zoom.”
And while Bruno is using a set of adjustable dumbbells for his training, you can take on the Zoom Body plan with anything you have around the house. You can easily swap the weights out with water jugs, or give it a shot with your pets, or tiny humans, or just the overwhelming weight of all of the existential crises that have wracked your brain during quarantine. Really, any load will do.
Okay, maybe becoming a trap king just for Zoom could be taking things a step too far. Want to even out your body and hit the seasonal staples? Check out our Summer Body Guide for the workouts and exercises that can help you achieve your goals.
